Mental Wellness as a Young Adult

Mental wellness, for me, is that part of life that holds the strong foundation for setting me straight as one who walks the earth with the weight of sufferings. It does not necessarily mean getting rid of stress or anxiety, but, at this age, knowing oneself, going through the emotions, and knowing the boundaries for thriving.

At times, the expectation looms overhead, like a mountain that should be climbed for many young adults. Balancing education, career goals, relationship development, and personal growth may be an overwhelming burden. Mental wellness is recognizing that pausing, reflecting, and asking for help when necessary are all okay. It means knowing that sometimes taking a step back does not make one a failure, rather it does put me and my needs first.

A part of my journey of mental wellness is very much attributed to self-care. It means writing things down to sort through my mind, going for a walk to clear it, or contacting friends or family when it all comes crashing in. These little things tell me that mind health is just as important as physical health.

Mostly, mental wellness is resilience, adapting to circumstances, while being it kind to myself. It's understanding that the struggles don't define me but the way I deal with them does.

Mental wellness for a young adult is not a concept, but a way of life: today's intense practice of self-awareness and self-compassion, which contributes to making me the best I can be.
