Why Understanding Your Emotions Matters


Have you ever felt upset, stressed, or overwhelmed but couldn’t quite explain why? According to Dr. Marc Brackett, creator of the RULER method, “If you don’t know what you’re feeling, it’s hard to know what to do with your feelings.” In other words, emotional awareness is the foundation of emotional well-being.

Developed by Yale University’s Center for Emotional Intelligence, the RULER method offers a simple yet powerful framework for managing emotions. It encourages us to recognize what we are feeling, Understand what caused it, Label the emotion accurately, Express it in a healthy way, and Regulate it effectively.

These five steps may sound simple, but they can make a remarkable difference in our daily lives. When we learn to acknowledge our emotions rather than ignore them, we become better equipped to handle stress, build stronger relationships, and navigate life’s challenges with greater resilience.

The good news is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to emotional regulation. For some, it may be a walk in the park; for others, a quiet conversation, deep breathing, journaling, or even spending time in a favourite place. Finding what works for you is part of the journey.

By practising the RULER approach regularly, we can cultivate greater self-awareness, emotional balance, and a deeper sense of well-being.
